Mint closed 23 March 2024

Canadians got the worst version of the Mint shutdown.

US users were pointed at Credit Karma. Canadians were pointed at a download button. Here is what actually replaces Mint.

What actually happened

Worth being precise about, because the Canadian version of this story is genuinely different from the American one.

Intuit announced the shutdown in November 2023
The closing date was first set at 31 December 2023, then pushed back. Mint finally shut down on 23 March 2024, taking the Canadian service with it.
US users were directed to Credit Karma
Intuit owns both. US users could carry over account balances, historical net worth and roughly three years of transactions.
Credit Karma is not a budgeting app
It shows transactions, balances and credit monitoring, but it does not offer the monthly and category budgets that were the reason most people used Mint. Even the users who did get a migration path lost the core feature.
Canada had no migration path at all
Credit Karma launched in Canada in November 2016 and closed its Canadian operations in 2018. There was no Canadian Credit Karma to migrate to, so Canadian Mint users were told to download their transaction data and find something else.

Where these facts come from

Credit Karma had already left Canada in 2018. There was nothing to migrate to.

Credit Karma launched in Canada in November 2016 and closed its Canadian operations two years later. When Mint shut down on 23 March 2024, US users were offered a destination and Canadian users were offered a download button. Credit Karma's 2016 announcement · checked August 2026

What to check before you commit again

The lesson of Mint isn't which app to pick. It's that a free product with no visible business model can be switched off, and your data goes with it.

Does it connect to Canadian banks?

The most common failure. Plenty of well-reviewed budgeting apps are US-only, or support Canadian banks only partially. Check your actual bank before committing any time to setup.

Can you get your data out?

Mint's ending was survivable for anyone who could export. Ask what export looks like before you need it, not after an announcement.

How does it make money?

Mint was free because it monetised elsewhere. Not automatically bad, but it ties the product's survival to something other than whether you find it useful.

Where does your data live?

Cross-border data handling is a reasonable thing for a Canadian to ask about, and a specific answer is a better sign than a reassuring adjective.

Is the free tier real?

"Free trial" and "free plan" are different products. Mint refugees in particular tend to be looking for the second one.

Does it handle CAD and USD?

If any of your spending is in US dollars, and subscriptions count, an app that supports one currency per budget will make you maintain two of them.

The honest part

  • TrackE5 has not launched. Mint ran for roughly sixteen years and served millions of people. TrackE5 is a waitlist. If you need something working today, this page is not going to be the answer, and we would rather say so than bury it.
  • It is not end-to-end encrypted and is not zero-knowledge. Our servers read transaction details in order to categorise them — the Security page is specific about what that means.
  • There is no iOS or Android app yet. TrackE5 runs on the web.
  • Other apps connect to Canadian banks too. Monarch, YNAB, Lunch Money and PocketSmith all serve Canadians. We are not going to pretend the category is empty.
